Day 3 Unit 1

Unit 1. Simple chase game – Loops and Variables

Dream Game

  1. Divide students into small groups of 2-3 people.
  2. In their small groups, ask students to generate a list of games that they enjoy playing. They can compose the list using their design journals or a sheet of paper.
  3. We suggest facilitating the brain dump brainstorming activity: give students a short time period (1-2 minutes) to write down as many games as they can. Then, have students narrow down their favorites from the brain dump list.
  4. After a few minutes, ask groups about their list of games:
What do the games have in common?
What features of their design make them a game?
  5. Facilitate a class discussion about what characteristics make up a game and generate a class list of common game mechanics.
  6. Next, ask students to imagine their dream game and write a list of design elements for that game.
  7. Invite students to share their dream game lists in their small groups to get feedback and suggestions.
  1. Make a list of your favorite games.
  2. What do the games have in common?
  3. What features of their design make them a game?
  4. Create a list of design elements for your dream game.

Simple chase game

Today, you will build a simple game, while you learn about two important computer science concepts, loops and variables

We will start by watching this video together.

  1. choose a character
  2. Make the character say something
  3. Glide the character around
  4. Choose an object to chase
  5. Make the character move to touch the object
  6. Track how many time the character collected the object with a score variable

WOMAN IN TECH SPOTLIGHT

  1. For 3 minutes, we will read the spotlight on Nicole Dominguez.
  2. What is User Experience?
  3. Let’s discuss why Nicole like to think about user experience.
